Today’s Phenomenal Woman:

Phillis Wheatley (1753- December 5, 1784)

  • First published black female poet and author
  • Kidnapped at 8 years old from West Africa and subsequently enslaved in Boston, MA
  • Under the direction of her master’s wife and children, she learned how to read. She also learned Latin and Greek and went on to write poetry
  • First published poem at age 13
  • In 1773, published her first and only book “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral”
  • First  black woman to achieve an international reputation as a writer and earn a living through her work
