Today’s Phenomenal Woman:

Dorothy Dandridge- (November 9, 1922- September 8, 1965)

 Film Actress, Singer

  • First black woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for best actress
  • Difficult childhood, never knew her father
  • Pushed into show business at a young age by her mother
  • Found some success as part of a musical trio with her sisters. As a teenager appeared in small roles in numerous productions
  • Perhaps best known for her lead role in Carmen Jones (1954)  which earned her an Academy Award nomination for best actress
  • A unique example of thwarted talent and ill-starred beauty. Her career success and challenges came from racial attitudes of society which allowed her to be an actress but also denied her acting roles due to the color of her skin
