Sarah Breedlove a.k.a. Madam C.J. Walker

(December 23, 1867 – May 25, 1919)

  • First female self-made millionaire
  • Child of freed slaves, Single mother
  • After losing most of hair due to a scalp disorder she began experimenting with different products to try to improve her condition
  • In 1905, created specialized hair products for African-American hair. Her husband helped her with advertising and with officially changing her name to “Madam C.J. Walker”
  • In 193, donated the largest amount by an African-American to help with the construction of the YMCA
  • At the time of her death, she was the sole owner of her business which had a value greater than one million dollars.
